Primary Schools

School support program

In the past, Friends of Mexico has supported several local primary schools. We have given children various types of supplies for school. About seven years ago, a new all-day school was built in the San Antonio colonia and we decided to help that school by building a kitchen and cafeteria. We bring pantry groceries every month to supplement their supplies because about 25% of the children cannot afford to pay the lunch fee. We have also helped with plumbing and electrical. A multi-purpose classroom project has been approved by the city government. We have promised to buy the equipment they will need for the interior, such as a sturdy cabinet and projector. The staff elected to name their new school Amigos de Mexico Primary, to honour the assistance we continue to provide.

Cannot afford to pay lunch fee

Our English as a Second Language team visits Amigos de Mexico Primary once per week from November to March to teach English. This program is so popular with our members that we decided to also offer these classes to a nearby school, Renato Vega Amador Primary. They seemed very happy to be included.

The majority of membership fees are used for the school support program and, the more members we have, the more we can do. In April 2020, Amigos de Mexico offered to pay for much-needed repairs to the leaking roof of the primary school in the colonia of Santa Fe. We have also offered to finish a small special education classroom at Renato Vega Amador Primary. Funds were raised by the parent committee and they started building, but the plan to continue was put on hold during the pandemic.

We look forward to open schools and helping ensure quality education for the children in these poor areas. Members have the opportunity to attend special functions and celebrations of Mexican holidays.

Francisco Madero Herrera primary school roof repair, April 2020.

Friends of Mexico offered to help a poor school with a project. Francisco Madero had been waiting for assistance from the municipal government because their roof was leaking and materials were being ruined. We were happy to complete this project in April 2020.
